Summer 1998 Montana's and Canada's join Rocky Mountain Park system
possesses an untamed beauty - sharply etched mountains towering above evergreen forests,
glacier-carved valleys, alpine meadows and deep blue valleys. The incredible scenery,
combined with some challenging riding, creates a truly rewarding bicycling adventure.
Highlights include: Our adventure begins in the bustling resort of Whitefish, MT. The first day ride will
take us to Glacier National Park, where we will stay at the Lake McDonald Lodge. On day
two we'll leave at sunrise in order to negotiate the Going-to-the-Sun road and reach Logan
Pass before 11am, as required by park rules. The eight mile climb from the valley floor
follows a steady 6% grade - a challenging ride, but well worth the effort. The road,
chiseled from solid mountain rock, offers views of the surrounding park that are so
fantastic you'll forget you're working up a sweat! The nonstop scenery continues as we ride north into Canada along the eastern slope of
the Rockies. We'll explore Waterton Lakes National Park which, with America's Glacier
National Park, forms the International park, the Peace Park was created in 1932 as a
symbol of friendship between Canada and the United States. Here we enjoy the lavish Prince
of Wales Hotel, take a wilderness hike and enjoy a pleasure cruise on Upper Waterton Lake
during our layover day. From Waterton we'll pedal north into the rolling plains of Alberta, then turn westward
at Pincher Creek, cresting the Continental Divide at Crows Nest Pass. We'll head south
when we get to Elko, British Columbia, and return to the United States at the Port of
Roosville. With the end of the tour near, we'll traverse Montana's beautiful northwest
lakes country between the Salish Mountains and the Whitefish Range, and then pedal back
into Whitefish. This is a great way to explore two of the most stunning parks in North
America!
